Sustainable Development

Sustainability is the idea that the whole of Earth’s population can thrive within the limits of us only having one planet. At the moment, the average person in the UK places such a burden on the planet that - in terms of resources (energy, water, materials) - if everyone in the world lived like us we would need 3 planets to survive. On the other hand, many people in the world go without clean water and do not have electricity. Clearly this is not sustainable.

One way to look at sustainability is to think of it as a 3-legged stool. The 3 legs represent the economy, society and the natural environment. If we do not consider the leg that represents the environment, then this leg gets shorter or is cut off completely. When this happens, the stool will not be balanced and will therefore fall over.

Similarly, the environment can sometimes suffer due to rapid economic growth. This can also cause impacts on society through harm to health from pollution.

It would be inaccurate to say that the 3 pillars have to be perfectly balanced in everything we do. But we at least have to consider the effects of what we do on both society and the environment, as well as our bottom line, in order to be sustainable and not put future generations at risk.
