Introduction to CEEQUAL

The Application of CEEQUAL
(Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Awards Scheme)

CEEQUALCivil engineering projects are often in a unique position to contribute to sustainability objectives at a local, regional, national and even international level.  CEEQUAL provides a framework for those involved in the design, construction and operation of a development to integrate environmental, social and sustainability benefits into their projects – and a way to measure and publicise their successes.

CEEQUAL courseThe use of CEEQUAL (which is supported by the Institute of Civil Engineering – ICE) provides an opportunity for developers to be publically acknowledged for their commitments to being ‘green’. CEEQUAL encompasses a wide range of sustainability indicators against which a project is scored, including:  project management; land use; ecology and biodiversity; the historic environment; water resources and the water environment; energy and carbon; material use; waste management; transport, effects on neighbours; and relations with the local community and other stakeholders. Because CEEQUAL encourages actions to gain public support for projects, minimise material use and maximise efficiency in use, it provides an opportunity for development cost savings, as well as sustainability gains.

One of the keystone aspects of CEEQUAL is project management. It is critical that sustainability measures are incorporated into management strategies, such as the training of personnel and the involvement of designers and contractors who have strong sustainability based environmental policies.

The aim of the course is to provide learners with an introduction to CEEQUAL and provide an insight into the practical application of the processes required to gain certification. Learners will be given the opportunity to explore various sustainable opportunities, which score well under CEEQUAL. The learners will also have an opportunity to learn how their sites can achieve the highest CEEQUAL rating possible.
